frequently asked questions:
Why should I clean my roof?
Cleaning your roof will remove those ugly black stains and streaks on your roof caused by algae. This algae can decrease the lifespan of your roof by 10 years or more. Cleaning your roof can also lower your energy bill. For example, If your roof shingles are light grey in color but appear black because of algae growth it can make your AC run more often which leads to a higher electric bill. Similar to how a black car gets much hotter in the summer than a light grey car.
Does cleaning my roof really extend the life of the roof?
Yes it does. In a couple of ways. That black stuff you see on your roof is a type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. This type of algae loves to feed on the limestone filler material in your shingle. Literally "eating away" at your roof. This type of algae also acts as a wet carpet holding moisture which over time causes premature aging, rotting and granule loss.
Can roof cleaning damage my shingles?
No, not if it is done using the correct methods. Pressure washing your roof is not the correct way. Pressure washing is the main cause for roof cleaning damage. No matter who you use to clean you roof make sure you do not have your roof pressure washed.
How can my roof be cleaned without causing damage?
By using a low pressure chemical cleaning method recommended by the shingle manufactures. The method we use at Haverty's is the same method recommended by Owens Corning and GAF (the two largest shingle manufacturers) and ARMA (Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association) and is safe on shingle and tile roofs.
Do I need to be home durring the cleaning?
You do not have to be home during the cleaning. We will schedule your roof to be cleaned when it is most convenient for you.
How much does it cost?
Obviously, we do not have a single set price because homes vary greatly in size and severity of algae. All estimates are free. If you choose to use us to clean your roof we require no money up front.
